You wouldn’t walk drunk, bare-foot down a dark alley in the middle of the night at home, would you? So why do so many people take unnecessary risks when on holiday?
Unfortunately, many of us tend to leave our common sense at the airport when we jet off to the sun, forgetting that personal safety is just as important, if not more so, as you’re in completely alien surroundings.
Holidays are about fun and enjoyment, meeting new people and letting go of your cares and worries, however, don’t go finding yourself a whole set of other cares and worries!
This summer, there have been countless reports of attacks and wrongdoings to tourists in resorts the world over, and whilst such things happen everywhere, it’s a common theme running that many of these occurrences involve holidaymakers drinking too much, heading off alone into unknown areas, especially females, and trusting people they do not know at all.
We’ve all done it, I know I have, I’ve let my inhibitions down thanks to a few holiday measures of cocktails and foreign alcohol, and wandered off alone; I’ve even got on the back of a scooter with my friend, who I call a friend, but I don’t know that well. It’s crazy, and I’ve since learnt to be a hell of lot more careful with my personal safety.
Holidays should be enjoyed from the moment you leave the house, to the moment you return, with all limbs intact, and no bad memories. Rest up before you go, get your head in the holiday mode, whilst keeping your senses intact, and a great way to do this is by starting the whole shebang early. It might sound odd to combine these two subjects, but I’ve found that chilling out, being rested, in the right frame of mind and raring to go really does help. Staying overnight at the airport is a great suggestion, and I’ve stayed at many of the Dublin Airport hotels from HolidayExtras.co.uk over the last year or so, and can’t rate them highly enough. Wherever you fly from, you’ll find a range of hotels to suit every budget and need, and most large UK airports have many to choose from. When flying from London, I try many of the Gatwick Airport hotels, and can’t get enough of the Sofitel, a great hotel that definitely has my seal of approval.
With your mind firmly focused on having fun in the safest possible way, you can truly head to the sun to really enjoy your time. Casting your cares away is exactly what we go away for, but remember not to take those unnecessary risks! That person you’ve just met cannot be trusted until you know them better, that scooter is dangerous because you have no helmet, do not go in the sea after a few drinks, no matter how hot the night is and no matter how refreshing it seems, and do not wander off on your own! Stick together, keep your wits about you, just as you would at home, and you can be assured of a safe and enjoyable break.
